The Ickabog is a legend that lives in the country of Cornacopia. The Ickabog is a man-eating and ruthless monster. A quest is taken up by King Fred of Cornucopia; he is determined to find the Ickabog and kill it. It is on this quest that disaster strikes. One of the majors is accidentally shot and is mistakenly eaten by the Cornucopia citizens, and soon a canon of lies and deceit rapidly make their way around the cities, all due to one of the king’s lords: Lord Spittleworth. Spittlewroth makes the Ickabog legend a life of it’s own, ruining the perfect cities of Cornucopia. And Bert and Daisy Dovetail, two best friends, are thrown into the middle of it.
Bert Beamish and Daisy Dovetail have been best friends ever since they could walk. But when Daisy’s mother, the royal seamstress, dies because of a sickness, Daisy blames King Fred for making her work to her death. It is from this point on that Daisy and Bert’s friendship develops a crack. But soon, it is up to them to save the maelstrom city and find the truth about the Ickabog.
I was excited to read J. K. Rowling’s new book The Ickabog. (Scholastic Inc.) As I started reading I thought: This is okay. But I had judged the book by the first few pages. As I read a few more chapters, I was shocked at the outcome of one of the lord’s behavior in that chapter. I soon discovered that in every chapter his behavior played up, though not for the best, but making the story more thrilling than I could have imagined it to be.
Soon I was at the peak of events and I was hooked. Rowling arranged the deaths, characters, and deceptions in a way that would demolish Cornucopia or save it at the last second. The Ickabog is an original fairytale filled with cunning plans and lively characters that readers will enjoy to the very end.
